Faster content, evidence and HCP follow-up, with a named human signatory on every claim

We help commercial, medical affairs and market access teams use AI for the drafting and checking around promotional and scientific work. Responsibility for what is said never moves off your signatories.

Short answer

How can AI help pharma commercial and medical affairs teams?

AI suits bounded support tasks: monitoring literature, drafting medical information replies from approved content, checking that references and claims line up before review, and preparing briefings for healthcare professional engagement. It does not transfer responsibility. Under the ABPI Code a nominated human signatory still certifies promotional material, and in the US the same substantiation standards apply to AI-drafted copy.

Who this covers

Organizations in this segment

  • Commercial and brand teams at pharmaceutical and biotech companies
  • Medical affairs, medical information and field medical teams
  • Market access, pricing and health economics groups
  • Promotional review and regulatory affairs committees
  • Owners of patient support and disease awareness programs
Challenges

The business problems that hold this segment back

01

Content outruns review capacity

Every promotional item needs medical, legal and regulatory review. AI drafts faster than review can follow, so the review queue becomes the new bottleneck.

02

Responsibility cannot be transferred

PMCPA guidance says AI-assisted review does not transfer responsibility from the company. FDA's Office of Prescription Drug Promotion reviews drug promotion for false or misleading claims and announced AI-assisted surveillance of drug ads in September 2025.

03

Pilots stall before production

Bain reported in April 2025 that 24% of pharma AI proofs of concept reached production, against 35% for providers. A pilot needs an owner, a review route and a commercial target to become routine.

04

Policies lag behind use

In a 2026 survey of 367 medical affairs professionals, 22% used AI for literature review and 27% for key opinion leader engagement, yet only about a third reported organizational AI policies. People are already using tools in the gap.

05

In one small US survey, trust in AI-drafted compliance work was low

In one small US promotional review survey (n=40), only 7.5% had partially or fully deployed AI for review, and 65% distrusted AI to create regulatory compliance submissions. Hallucinations and missing audit trails topped the concerns.

Where AI fits

Suitable AI, and how mature each application is

Established means widely deployed and well documented. Emerging means real deployments exist but results vary with your data and workflow. Early means pilots or research, not a safe default.

Emerging

Literature monitoring and evidence summaries

AI scans new publications against a defined list of products and topics and drafts short summaries with the source passage attached. A medical scientist checks each summary against the paper. The risk to control is an invented or misattributed citation.

Emerging

Medical information request drafting

AI classifies incoming HCP requests, finds the matching approved standard response and drafts a reply from that content only. A qualified professional verifies every reply, and nothing is drafted from the model's general knowledge.

Emerging

Reference and claim pre-checks

AI compares a draft with its reference list, flags statements with no supporting citation and spots missing required elements, so first review starts from a cleaner draft. It is a checker. The reviewer or signatory still decides.

Emerging

Channel and market adaptation of approved copy

Once a claim is approved, AI can reshape its wording for a congress booklet or email while holding the claim, reference and required statements fixed. Each adaptation is a new item for review, and UK and US rules differ.

Emerging

HCP engagement planning

AI prepares a briefing from an individual's published work and your past interactions. Surveyed medical affairs professionals reported using AI for key opinion leader engagement. A field medical or brand lead decides who to approach and why.

Early

Field interaction notes and CRM hygiene

AI could draft call notes and update CRM fields. We found no independent adoption evidence in pharma, and notes can contain adverse event information. We would pilot narrowly, with safety reports following your existing process.

What stays human

Responsibilities that stay with your people

Nominated signatory and review committee

Medical, legal and regulatory reviewers approve the final item, and the nominated signatory certifies it. Responsibility does not shrink because a draft came from AI.

Head of medical affairs

Owns scientific accuracy and decides where promotional exchange ends.

Medical information manager

Approves the standard response library and reviews every drafted reply.

Drug safety lead

Defines what counts as possible adverse event information in AI-supported channels.

Compliance officer

Keeps the AI inventory, training record and audit evidence through AI governance work.

Improvements

Operational changes you can expect to work on

01

Cleaner first-pass review

Drafts reach reviewers with references already matched. Teams watch items returned for basic corrections and review rounds per item.

02

Faster medical information turnaround

Classification and draft replies from approved content are meant to cut search time. The measure is time from request to reviewed reply.

03

Evidence that reaches teams sooner

Medical, market access and brand teams see relevant new publications earlier, in one format.

04

Consistent claims across channels

A controlled claims library with usage tracking should lower the chance that an outdated claim survives in a booklet or email template.

Commercial value

Commercial value without compliance debt

Pharma sells to prescribers, payers and health systems, and each judges you on accuracy as much as speed. A faster, cleaner content cycle puts launch material in front of HCPs sooner, and a responsive medical information service gives them a reason to come back. Digital marketing reports then show which channels HCPs actually use.

  • Shorten the gap between a publication or label update and approved material reaching HCPs
  • Give HCPs fast, traceable answers through medical information
  • Prepare field teams with approved content instead of ad hoc summaries
  • Keep one audit trail from draft to signatory certificate for each item
Rules and limits

US and UK rules that apply, and what is not ready yet

General information for planning, not legal advice. Statuses and dates are as published at the time of writing.

United States

  • FDA OPDP: reviews prescription drug promotion for false or misleading claims, and FDA announced AI-assisted surveillance of drug advertising in September 2025. AI-drafted copy needs the same substantiation, risk presentation and human review.
  • FTC and consumer health data: the Endorsement Guides require disclosure of material connections and substantiation of implied health results. A patient-facing app or tracker outside HIPAA may fall under the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule (amended rule effective 29 July 2024) and laws such as Washington's My Health My Data Act (principal duties from 31 March 2024).
  • FDA draft guidance (January 2025) on AI models supporting drug regulatory decisions addresses model credibility for submissions, not commercial content. FDA and EMA published broader principles in January 2026. Both sit outside our scope.

United Kingdom

  • ABPI Code and PMCPA: AI-assisted review does not transfer responsibility. Material must stay accurate, balanced and non-misleading, and final promotional material needs certification by a nominated human signatory under clause 8.1.
  • CAP Code rule 12.12: prescription-only medicines must not be advertised to the public, including through paid search, websites or social media. A platform's permission process does not override the UK ban.
  • UK GDPR and PECR: HCP data is personal data. Marketing email and SMS to individual subscribers generally need consent unless every soft opt-in condition is met, and advertising cookies and pixels need prior consent under PECR, and ICO guidance updated in 2026 explains the narrow exceptions.
Not mature or not suitable yet
  • AI as the final reviewer. Hallucinations and missing audit trails top the concerns in the promotional review survey, and responsibility stays with the company. We prepare review with AI, never approve with it.
  • Fully automated personalized outreach to HCPs. Evidence for scaled deployment is thin, and consent rules differ by channel and country.
  • Drug discovery, clinical development and regulatory submissions. These are outside our scope.
Where to start

Where we would begin

  1. 01

Start with the medical information inbox

It is a contained flow with approved source content. We map request types and build classification and draft steps against your standard responses, using AI automation with a reviewer on every reply.

  2. 02

Add pre-checks to one content type

We pick one item type, such as a detail aid or email template, add reference and claim matching ahead of review, and measure review rounds before and after.

  3. 03

    Write the missing AI policy

We inventory tools teams already use, set rules for what data and content may enter them and record how the signatory process applies to AI-assisted items.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can AI review promotional material for compliance?

It can check, but it cannot approve. PMCPA says AI-assisted review does not transfer responsibility, and a nominated human signatory certifies the final item under clause 8.1. We build pre-checks that make human review faster.

Do you work on drug discovery or clinical trials?

No. We work on commercial, medical affairs and market access operations. Trial operations sit closer to clinical research organizations, which have their own requirements.

Can medical information use AI to answer HCP questions?

Yes, as a drafting aid built on your approved responses, with a qualified reviewer on every reply. Anything that could be an adverse event report goes to your safety process first.

How strong is the evidence that this works?

Mixed, and we say so. Medical affairs teams report using AI for literature review and analysis, but only 7.5% of surveyed promotional reviewers had deployed it for review. We start with bounded tasks and measure.

Is the UK different from the US?

Yes. The ABPI Code with PMCPA and CAP Code rule 12.12 shape UK work, while FDA OPDP and FTC rules shape US work. We configure review steps per market. MedTech claims follow device rules instead.
